The Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Program is a federal initiative administered by the U.S. Department of Transportation through the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). The program provides grants to metropolitan planning organizations, regional planning councils, counties, municipalities, Tribal governments, and other eligible entities to develop comprehensive safety plans and implement projects that improve roadway safety.

The goal of the SS4A Program is to support local and regional efforts to eliminate roadway fatalities and serious injuries through planning, collaboration,
and strategic investment. By combining data analysis, community engagement, and
evidence-based safety strategies, communities can better identify transportation safety needs and prioritize projects that
create safer streets for all users.

The Regional Safety Action Plan is guided by the Safe System Approach, a nationally recognized framework that acknowledges people make mistakes and that the transportation system should be designed to reduce the likelihood that those mistakes result in serious injury or death. The Safe System Approach focuses on safer road users, safer roads, safer vehicles, safer speeds, and improved post-crash care, creating multiple layers of protection throughout the transportation network.

ARPC is grateful for the collaboration and support of the local governments, transportation agencies, emergency responders, law enforcement agencies, public health professionals, community organizations, and residents who are participating in this regional effort. Together, these partnerships will help develop a Safety Action Plan that reflects local priorities and supports safer communities throughout the Apalachee Region.
