The Apalachee Regional Planning Council is helping communities throughout the Region take meaningful steps toward safer transportation systems through its Safe Streets for All (SS4A) program efforts. Designed to reduce roadway fatalities and serious injuries, the initiative supports local governments in creating safer, more accessible streets for everyone — whether traveling by car, bicycle, public transit, or on foot.

Transportation safety remains a growing concern across both urban and rural communities. Increasing traffic volumes, aging infrastructure, limited pedestrian facilities, and high-speed rural corridors can all contribute to dangerous roadway conditions. Through the Safe Streets for All program, ARPC is working alongside local governments, transportation partners, and community stakeholders to identify these challenges and develop practical, data-driven solutions that improve safety and mobility across the Region.

A major focus of the program is collaboration. ARPC helps bring together counties, municipalities, transportation agencies, law enforcement, emergency responders, schools, and residents to evaluate local transportation needs and prioritize improvements. By encouraging regional coordination, communities are better equipped to pursue funding opportunities and implement projects that create long-term safety benefits.

The initiative supports a wide range of transportation safety strategies, including:

  • Identifying high-risk intersections and roadway corridors

  • Improving roadway design and traffic operations

  • Expanding pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure

  • Enhancing lighting, signage, and visibility

  • Supporting safer school and community access

  • Promoting transportation options for older adults and individuals with disabilities

  • Encouraging policies and planning practices that prioritize safety

In many rural communities, transportation challenges can be especially complex. Limited infrastructure, long travel distances, and fewer alternative transportation options often increase reliance on roadways for daily activities. ARPC’s regional approach helps communities address these issues collectively, allowing local governments to share resources, coordinate planning efforts, and pursue innovative solutions that may not be achievable independently.

The Safe Streets for All program also aligns with broader efforts to strengthen community resilience and quality of life. Safer streets can support economic development, improve public health, encourage outdoor activity, and create stronger connections between neighborhoods, schools, businesses, and community services. By investing in transportation safety today, communities are helping build a more sustainable and connected future for generations to come.

As ARPC continues advancing transportation safety initiatives throughout the Region, the organization remains committed to providing technical expertise, fostering partnerships, and helping communities navigate the planning and funding process. Through the Safe Streets for All program, the Apalachee Region is taking proactive steps toward a future where every roadway user can travel safely and confidently.
